Around the Traps: February ‘Ernie Wills Memorial’

The Warren Gun Club hosted the 19th year of the Ernie Wills Memorial Shoot on the 14th.
44 shooters travelled from afar to contest this major day of shooting for the Warren Gun Club.

The ‘Ernie Wills Memorial Trophy’ is won by the most consistent shooter of the day, and this year was won by local shooter Rodney Anderson shooting a 131/135 for the day.
Rodney was fortunate to win a lovely commemorative glass and cash for his efforts, as well as being presented the memorial cup by Ernie’s brother Mark and sister in law Deb, who had travelled from Nelson Bay especially to attend the occasion.
The club would like to sincerely thank the Wills family for continuing to support this event, and letting us have the honour of contesting a major shoot in the name of ‘Ern’, who was a great and valued club member.

During the day, the main event the Double Barrel Championship was hotly contested, with Orange CTC shooter David Player winning following a very brief shoot-off. David also received a lovely commemorative glass and cash for the win.

Following a lovely dinner provided by the Warren Gun Club, the club then hosted the NSW Western Zone Night Double Rise Championship. This event was contested by 36 shooters, with Steven Walker from Arnhem Gun Club taking the win.
Steve shot an impressive 28 from 30 clays, in very trying conditions – as it was blowing a gale.

Around the Traps: January

The first Club Shoot for 2015 started at 3pm on Saturday as is generally required by the traditional heat of January, however 20 shooters still turned out for a rather grey but pleasant afternoon with some light rain, and heavier flies. The Gun Club grounds have responded well to the ever-needed rain, bringing a nice finish to last year’s lane works.

Four events were contested with some great results across all grades.
The first of which was a 20 Target Point Score Cash Divide event.
1st and 2nd place getters were: AA Grade- Lawrence Doyle 60/60, Ben Wild 58/60. A Grade – Roland Gale- 60/60, Scott Bennett 60/60. B Grade- Graeme Patten 59/60, David Rourke 57/60. C Grade- Douglas Ferguson 55/60, Paul Hendry 50/60.

The second event was 20 Target Double Barrel.
1st place getters were: AA Grade- Lawrence Doyle & Mark Ticehurst 20/20.
A Grade- Scott Bennett. B Grade- Mark Meers 20/20. C Grade- Douglas Ferguson 20/20.

The 3rd event was the 25 Target ‘Tom Wild Handicap’ with 2 Warren shooters scoring a ‘possible’ of 25/25 to qualify for the Tom Wild Memorial Shoot Off in October. They were AA-Grader Ben Wild at 21 metres, and C-Grader Douglas Ferguson on 15 metres.

The fourth and final event was a 20 Target Deauville Singles event shot at the Ball Trap. Shooters were paired, with AA and A graders drawn to team with B and C graders in shooting 1 target with only one shot each. No clear winner was determined as some 6 out of 9 teams shot 17/20 and the late afternoon light and weather pressed the shooters to retire for refreshments after a great days shooting.

The High Gun Winner was AA Grader Lawrence Doyle of Wagga Gun Club with 103/105.
A Grade was won by Roland ‘Butch’ Gale 100/105.
B Grade Graeme Patten 101/105, and C grade Douglas Ferguson 100/105.

Warren would like to thank the shooters who travelled from Coonamble, Cobar, Hermidale and Wagga for the day.

Next month the club will shoot 5 events including the ‘Ernie Wills Memorial’ as well as hosting the ‘Western Zone Double Rise Night Championship’.
Shooting will commence at 3 pm.
