Around The Traps: February

Warren Gun Club news by 410-

Hot! Damn hot, however 30 shooters from as far away as Brisbane shot at the Warren Gun Clubs combined Ernie Wills Memorial and Western Zone Night Double Rise Championship. It was a good roll up considering Orange had a major shoot on the same day.

Kelly Wills and Nigel Clarke supported the Ernie Wills Memorial shoot with a generous cash sponsorship. The contest for the prize was not finalised until a “shoot off” was contested between finalists with the same overall score. On a ‘if you miss a target you’re out’ basis.

The shoot off made for very entertaining shooting, from a spectator and competitor point of view. After much lead and gunpowder was expended Warren Gun Club’s Douglas Ferguson and Kyle Walton were first and second respectively with Andrew Murray from the Dubbo Club a very credible third after a hard fought contest.

There were five events contested over the day shoot with Kyle Walton- who rarely has an off- day winning the Double Barrel Championship and AA grade.
Rising star Douglas Ferguson won the A grade and the overall High Gun- including the Ernie Wills Trophy- and Andrew Murphy the B grade.
Not a frequent shooter, Bruce Hunt from Warren Club shot very well to win C grade. Good work Bruce.

The two stage programme was intersected with an interval of an hour or so when shooters and supporting families (there was a good roll up) had an opportunity to refresh with a beaut barbeque and trimmings prepared by Judith Williamson, Maria Kinsey, Hollie Anderson and Singe’erm Sid Kinsey.

When the sun and the tucker went down 16 shooters contested the Western Zone Night Double Rise shoot where shooters shot at 25 pairs of targets (one pair of targets exit the trap house at the same time at about a 90 degree angle to each other) under lights making for a challenging but spectacular event.

The event was won by Max Betts- a regular at Warren and a member at Brewarrina- with Warren’s Nathan Power runner up. Good on you Max; you can’t keep the old blokes down.

Coming up is the Club’s signature event on the weekend on the 12/13 March commencing on Saturday at 9.30. The Warren Gun Club presents the 2016 NSW Western Zone Carnival including the Golden Ibis Trophy and Dennis Hunt Memorial Cup.

See you there.
